Dark energy is a type of energy that produces repulsive energy. Many physicians believe that dark energy is responsible for the accelerating pace of the expansion of the Universe and roughly 70% of the Universe is made of dark energy. As with dark matter the existence of dark energy is inferred by the observation of phenomena that occur in the Universe. In 2011 the existence of dark energy became a topic of hot debate when Adam Riess, Saul Perlmutter and Brian Schmidt shared the Nobel Prize in physics for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe.
The extraordinary mystery of dark energy is the fact that despite the permanent expansion of the Universe its mass does not change at all.
